Character Ideas and Planning

Character planning and concepts are a meek disguise at best.  The truth is some of us are just going to make shit up as it goes on, and flood the RP chat with highly descript but ultimately non-informative emotes, and couple the emergent roleplay with the near-metagamingly pre-fed preconceptions about my character to paint a rough outline about her in the minds of my fellow players. Though philosophically speaking what that turns out to be is rather out of my control too.

Andy's got a point. But the thing is, if you play a Volsk, you'll be able to try the setting out and get a feeling for it until you get perma-killed. Then you can start your main.

I've played 9 different characters on SoH, not counting those I scrapped after just a few logins. At one point or another I've considered them all main characters. This is much the same style I applied during EM, and I suspect I'll do the same for DoN.
For my own amusement, I'll list my contribution to SoH chronologically:

• Lithonael barb/sorc - Too depressing to play.
• Soran spy - Tried infiltrating Borianas.
• Aredhel ranger - Didn't make any friends, the elitist bastard.
• Mok'tar shau'rah-kuhn - Death by comet.
• Aredhel explorer - MIA since the wall fell.
• Shunned carpenter - Still around.
• Paltinar hunter - Not very welcome since the war.
• Stoutaxe scholar - Still around for fireside RP.
• Soran paladin - Not sure since Ilraavel.

Oh by the way: If anyone can name/remember more than four of these I'll be your slave through DoN.

Some of us just have active imaginations and a clear idea of a personality and a favorite class. I didn't need to log in once to know that Soros was exactly where I wanted to be in SoH. The great part of a brand new setting is that we can partially define the dynamics.

I'm calling you out!
You went through several characters before you created Pyotr. Including but not limited to a wayward and a holy order cleric. It took you several log ins to come to the conclusion you wanted to be a part of soros and thus it was only after you had a feel of the server dynamic. What say you to this Zaogao! HARUUMPH etc. etc.

To throw in some more character ideas, since we seem to be going slightly off track, I'm currently tossing around the idea of a Convocation mage of some sort in my head, but as of yet I haven't decided. I doubt I will make any firm decision before I play a bit and see how the population aligns itself. Not much fun playing in an underpopulated faction after all.

Likewise. The remaining 10% is just to adapt to the setting with locations and the like. and I'll adjust it as it needs to be for the first 5 months after the release before everything gets set in stone. Though I'll give one hint. the concepts I've created are something that will drive whatever Grebs decides to make crazy. absolutely loony.

Ah, but my very first character was a Sorosian named Maksim who hoped one day to be a Symmetrist. My very first RP on the server was having Katherine Frost introduce my character to a freshly rolled Novykh Uriah in the Embassy lobby. His name wasn't Uriah then, even. So nyah.

Plus, SoH had already existed for many months at that point. The whole Dreadwatch thing already happened. There already was a dynamic, but on DoN we start fresh. We get to make that dynamic! Ok fine you made your point.

The point is that it's healthy to ponder and throw ideas against the wall. It's good to see how other people are interpreting the lore and what other people are excited about. It's all good man.

I think the alternative to people making commoner crafting alts is people making kobold alts if kobolds aren't their main characters. I see the potential for a healthy kobold population even if it seems like we're all spreading out in other directions to start. and who knows, there's been plenty of talk already here that it's impossible to say for sure what anyone will be playing after a few months on DoN.

Except where I'm concerned when the law - Sovellis is always right - comes into force.


I'm definitely looking at the Thavonir elf, already developed what I consider to be a reasonable back-story as well as class combo, but I'd dare not put it to paper (or forum text) for fear of humiliation when my best laid plans are put to waste by Clockwork or Ecstatic or more probably, Eggplaint.
