How would you like your lore?
« on: December 15, 2010, 09:18:17 am »
One of the big things we need before release is a repository of lore for you guys for easy reference. How would you like it given to you?

1) Through a wiki

2) Through a childboard on the forums with various topics

3) Some other way

Comments about the current wiki and such are encouraged. Thanks!

I really liked the wiki format. It beats a flurry of forum posts any day of the week...
In fact I'd like it if more of the OOC info got in there, FAQs and such. But that might be difficult for a new arrival to find?

The Wiki was a fantastic source of information about SoH as a new player. It is great because it can have big picture articles provided by staff along side player generated content about PCs, organizations and events. And it's all easily cross referencable.

Wiki, most certainly.

I agree on the wiki point. Its much more adaptable and updatable than the forums. It also allows players to tie information for their profiles/articles into existing primary lore.

On the other hand it wouldn't hurt to have core info on the forums to provide a slightly wider set of information mediums for new-starters.

agreed. It can be daunting for new players to have to hunt down info on a wiki when they're just starting out. Easy to find and read child boards would help on this point a lot. you COULD even copy the info from the wiki into the child board posts just for ease of writing.

Wiki for details of details. A forum FAQ / Lore overview for main themes. (with wiki links)

Sometimes a wiki can be hard to navigate if you're looking for something you know the characteristics but not the name of.
SoH: Celandir Amolyn - DEAD - Sacrificial whoever
DoN: A druidess of intent

Id also like to see the Wiki format.
I remember that I used it several of times,
when I was a new player to get information,
rather than searching topic after topic.
Edit:
Unless the forum topics with the information are very well sorted,
and no player entries are made.

A few forum posts with a broad introduction to the setting would be wonderful so that newer players and old alike can swiftly get familiar with the basics, that's what brings new people in, afterall. I am all for the continuation of the wiki however, might I suggest a somewhat different format? I know one of the hallmarks of wiki is that everyone can edit it but we need to have some filters in place since, afterall, this is setting information written by the staff.

I would put forward that a wiki that only members of staff and a few volunteer caretakers can edit might be a good long-term option. It was fun making a PC section but when it comes down to it those areas and faction details swiftly become out of date and it reflects poorly on the server as a whole if outdated information is just hanging around. We can always have general overviews and introductions to our characters in roleplay posts afterall and memberlists are easier to maintain on a forum.

Plotting in the shadows: back full-time for DC 5.

Yeah, we're kinda tinkering with how to handle character profiles and the like. Right now the boards are setup so the roleplay section is split into three different subcategories (The main boards will be used by staff to convey main/side plot details and times) : Letters, Rumors, and character "blogs". The new blog section will encompass journals, short stories, memoirs, basically anything a player wants to put in there.

Thanks for the input guys. We're in overdrive right now getting everything prepared for the big day.

If it makes things easier I can get clockwork sacked so he can work on more important things?

I would put forward that a wiki that only members of staff and a few volunteer caretakers can edit might be a good long-term option.

I object closing wiki at all. Lock certain articles if that can be done, but overall things should remain open for anyone who has nothing better to do.

Two main reasons:

1)Narrowing it down makes it more of a responsibility.. a duty. And that wears people out. Not to mention running the risk of naming a few volunteered editors, who despite being honestly contributing and good people, start to think they're suddenly 'better' than others. :P They'd also have to be in the know of everything.

2)As with all wikis, I'm sure the positive, constructive input in terms of new (but not excessively revealing and plot spoiling) information thriumps over the negative ones. There are, after all, far more satisfying means of trolling.
