I agree on the wiki point. Its much more adaptable and updatable than the forums. It also allows players to tie information for their profiles/articles into existing primary lore.On the other hand it wouldn't hurt to have core info on the forums to provide a slightly wider set of information mediums for new-starters.
Wiki for details of details. A forum FAQ / Lore overview for main themes. (with wiki links)Sometimes a wiki can be hard to navigate if you're looking for something you know the characteristics but not the name of.

I would put forward that a wiki that only members of staff and a few volunteer caretakers can edit might be a good long-term option.
